When you're a mum, you're constantly juggling A LOT of things - work, your kids' activities, pick-ups and drop-offs, keeping the house in order, trying to maintain a connected relationship with your partner - which leaves little time (or energy) to concentrate on your personal needs. As a result, self-care easily gets neglected.

Even though you may think it’s just part of being a mum, continually putting your needs last is likely affecting your physical and mental health. You might find yourself feeling agitated, exhausted, emotional, stressed out, and on track to a complete burn-out. Not ideal!

This is why it’s so important to make time for self-care. It’s not selfish - it’s self PRESERVATION. By taking better care of yourself, you'll not only be filling your cup, you’ll also be at your best for your family too.

Not sure where to begin? Here are five simple, and most importantly, realistic self-care strategies you can start following right now:

Take advantage of early mornings

One of the easiest ways to ensure that you don't miss out on time for yourself is to start your day earlier - even if it means just setting the alarm back an extra 30 minutes. Go for a walk, do a workout, practice meditation, journal, read a book or just get ready and eat your breakfast in peace!

Stay active

It might be the last thing you feel like doing at the time, but exercise has countless benefits for both your mind and body. You may not be able to make it to the gym for an hour, but that doesn’t mean you can’t find a way to be active. The key to regular exercise is making sure you choose something that you actually enjoy doing so you’re motivated to keep it up and, importantly, look forward to doing it. Then it’s about fitting it into the flow of your day. Sometimes this means having to get up a little earlier or squeezing in a quick session while your baby naps.

Embrace micro self-care techniques

We all know it's just not realistic to soak in a candlelit bubble bath for hours with a glass of wine (as much as we want to). The trick here is to practice self-care in short periods so you can easily squeeze it into your busy routine. For example, try a five-minute guided meditation when you wake up, listen to your favourite music or podcast while driving or doing housework, or read 10 pages of a book before going to bed.

Stay connected

Being a mum can sometimes be isolating, especially if you don’t have many friends that are also mums. Spending your entire day with just you and your little one/s can be… a lot. That’s why it’s important to stay connected. You might not have a lot of time for coffee dates but if you have 30 minutes during your baby's nap time, schedule a phone date with your best friend or a family member. It’s amazing how much lighter you can feel after catching up with loved ones and having an adult conversation!

Get outside

Stuck inside with the kids all day? A daily dose of fresh air and sunshine does wonders for relieving stress! Take the kids to the local park, go for a daily walk, or even just sit on the balcony or in the backyard for 5 minutes!

Once you let go of unrealistic ideas about what self-care has to look like to you, it can become easy to find practical acts that nourish your mind, body, and spirit in little moments throughout your day. It doesn’t have to look a certain way or last a certain length of time. It’s all about what works for you.
